Veruca Salt didn’t sleep for three peaceful days following the arrival of her baby at home. The desire to feel his small hand clutching hers and to watch him breathe took the place of rest. She was overcome with awe rather than fear. Something changed drastically inside her the moment Cash arrived. He not only made her whole, but he also gave her life a completely different purpose.

Before becoming a mother, Veruca Salt—known offline as Kimberley Summer Hartley—was already well-known. She had become extremely popular on the internet thanks to her frank criticism of OnlyFans’ work, her sardonic humor, and her heavily tattooed look. Her audience grew when she revealed she was pregnant in June 2023; they sent gifts, watched baby hauls, and were excitedly awaiting the birth of baby Cash.

Suddenly, Salt’s content changed from spicily humorous to poignant documentation. She was notably unfiltered in her sharing of nursery plans and food cravings. She gained trust by being honest. Then everything fell apart less than seven weeks after his birth.

She discovered her son dead in his sleep when she woke up for a nighttime feeding in early February. Later, the medical report would mention Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, an incurable illness with no known causes or warning signs. Salt went from enjoying her new role as a mother to enduring emotional destruction in that instant.

Instead, she raised her voice. She posted a tribute to Cash within a few days. She posted a picture of her son resting quietly in his coffin in one particularly heartfelt gesture. The carefully crafted image was intended to preserve rather than to provoke. However, it caused a stir on social media.

Once-adoring audiences turned uncomfortably quickly. The same comment sections that had congratulated her were now rife with finger-pointing, angry outbursts, and calls for “trigger warnings.” There was a flurry of speculation, with some accusing Salt of negligence and others falsely blaming vaccines. Almost immediately, the empathy vanished.

What followed was a grief spiral that was distinctly contemporary. When Salt publicly expressed his grief, he was accused of being attention-seeking. She was told she had gone too far in honoring her son with a final photo. However, who draws that perceived line? Who determines the appropriate level of grief for a digital platform?

Her reply was purposefully incisive. Regarding the picture, she remarked, “He looked beautiful.” “And perhaps consider your options before clicking if you’re horrified to see a dead baby on a grieving mother’s Instagram.” She declined to purify her experience for use on social media. She only asked that people understand that this grief wasn’t theirs to judge, not for forgiveness or even understanding.

Many parents were moved by her candor. Salt’s bravery seemed to validate their own repressed pain, especially for those who had also experienced loss. Her refusal to erase or obfuscate her sorrow was a subliminal statement that death, no matter how tragic, need not be concealed.

This is not an isolated moment. It is similar to other cases where open mourning was punished for public women, particularly mothers. In 2020, Chrissy Teigen was also attacked online after sharing a hospital photo of herself with her stillborn son Jack. The timing and tone of Meghan Markle’s opinion piece regarding her miscarriage were questioned. In the digital realm, women’s grief is frequently questioned, misinterpreted, or ridiculed.

Veruca Salt’s act becomes especially inventive when viewed through this prism. She is opposing a system that dictates women should only discuss the pleasant aspects of their lives. Share the baby’s first laugh and the bump, but skip the funeral. Not the pain. Not the quiet that follows a coffin’s gentle thud.

Her picture wasn’t hideous. It was a letter of love. In a platform made for stories that vanish, it was about permanence. In a place that was fixated on progress, it was about remembering. Notably, it sparked a discussion about how to support bereaved people when their audience reaches millions.

Today’s influencers exist at the nexus of vulnerability and brand. Even though that area is very effective for interaction, it is cruel when tragedy strikes. It punishes sadness but rewards happiness. especially sadness that can’t be repackaged with hashtags or affiliate links.

However, Veruca Salt took a surprisingly audacious step by refusing to change course. She didn’t make a campaign or a product out of Cash’s passing. She just continued to speak the truth. Even if that reality was obscured by loss. even if the remarks were hurtful. despite trolls’ demands that she keep quiet.

Discussions surrounding her content have changed from shock to support in recent weeks. Many users are thinking back on their uneasiness and realizing that it stems from cultural norms. Society struggles with infant mortality, especially on the internet. It seems too unfiltered, too definitive, and too emotionally charged. However, thousands of families are isolated every year because of the silence surrounding baby loss.

Salt has positioned herself as a guide through a particularly harsh landscape rather than as a victim of public judgment by letting others into her process, not just the happy parts. She doesn’t perform her pain. It’s educational. It is gently but firmly asking us to perform better.

The picture of baby Cash is still there. It hasn’t been blurred or eliminated. It still speaks for families who had to bid farewell too soon. It serves as a reminder that grief has the capacity to heal rather than shock when it is expressed with dignity and purpose.
